In one case we were told this was because a person was asleep, although we were not able to account for other instances. We saw that the home was well maintained, furnished and decorated to a good standard. Most of the equipment was well maintained and regularly serviced according to health and safety standards.
The manager used effective systems to record and report on, accidents and incidents and take action when required. We observed staff providing support to people throughout our inspection visit. Clovelly House prides itself on the home cooked food it delivers. Our cooks freshly prepare the food we serve on the day every day, providing a full choice of breakfast, a two-course lunch, tea and supper. Clovelly House is situated within extensive, well maintained mature gardens, loved and nurtured by our gardener John who has cultivated our garden area for over 20 years. He ensures that they look beautiful all year around and are accessible for all, with decking and patios where residents may enjoy tea and cake or a glass of lemonade on a nice summer's day.

Residents and their relatives all receive an automatic 10% discount when using Be Fabulous’ facilities Lauren also often comes into the care home to give the residents manicures as well. The home had well established links with external professionals such as the district nurse service and the local general practitioners. We spoke to visiting professionals who were very positive about the staff and management of the home. There was some evidence that the administration of medication and recording regarding external medical input could be improved.
Amazing, caring and considerate staff
People told us the management had high standards and would listen if they had any concerns. Our observations of the care provided, discussions with people and records we assessed, enabled us to conclude individual wishes and needs were taken into account and respected. People who used the service said they were supported by caring, kind and professional staff. There was a friendly, calm and pleasant atmosphere on the day of the inspection. People had access to doctors, district nurses, chiropodists and opticians, although some improvement was required regarding documenting the support received from some external medical professionals. A relative told us if the doctor was called, staff would always contact them and keep them informed of any treatment.
There are a range of aids and adaptations to support people with limited mobility. This unannounced comprehensive inspection took place on the 8 January2018. The last comprehensive inspection took place on the 5 January2016. The service was meeting the requirements of the regulations at that time. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection.

Our most recent addition to the gardens is the beauty and wellness cabin; ran by Lauren Siddons, owner of Be Fabulous. Her business adds that extra little bit of glam to our care home. Lauren has a range of beauty treatments available from manicures, massages and facials, meaning the residents can enjoy that little bit of extra pampering at the end of the garden path.
There was a complaints procedure which was made available to people on their admission to the home and their relatives. People we spoke with told us they were happy and had no complaints. Staff wore protective clothing such as gloves and aprons when needed and there were appropriate procedure in place to manage infection control risks.

Clovelly House has 20 rooms, single bedrooms come as standard but there are a few rooms which can accommodate a couple or life-long friends. Most bedrooms are en-suite and all bathrooms are equipped with specialist features that are designed to meet the needs of our residents. In addition to this, many residents have access to their own balcony or veranda which are lovely to use on a summer's evening. We provide all furnishings for our rooms but welcome residents to bring any furniture, ornaments or photos that they would like in order for them to feel more at home whilst staying at Clovelly House.
However some records regarding fire equipment testing could be more detailed. Electrical equipment and the electrical circuit needed more frequent testing. There was no documented system of health and safety risk assessment. At this inspection we checked what procedures were in place regarding the administration of medication and we judged these were to a good standard. For example medication administration records were completed correctly. When any medication had not been administered an appropriate record had been made as to why this had occurred, for example, the person had refused or they were out.
People all had an individual care plan, which set out their care needs. Care plans contained satisfactory information and were accessible to staff. Beyond this, we actively encourage our residents to pursue any interests and hobbies they had prior to coming to Clovelly House and provide support to encourage this. We aim to give our residents a range of traditional homemade food which is tasty, fresh and locally sourced, with seasonal changes making dining at Clovelly House a pleasure that all can enjoy. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them.
